Ms. M. Scarbrough , Principal
Dear Epps Island Parents,
I am so excited to be the new principal at Epps Island!
I am a woman led by faith and I strongly believe that this is where I was meant to be.
To prepare for this role, I have worked in education for twenty years; ten of those years has been as a bilingual or ESL teacher in the elementary level. I also worked as a Spanish teacher at a Jr/Sr. high school for two years and for the last eight years, I have served as an assistant principal at Kleb Intermediate.
I was raised in downtown Houston and I attended schools in HISD. I am Mexican-American and grew up in a loving home with very traditional parents who insisted in sending my siblings and me to Mexico in the summers to ensure that we kept our strong ties to our roots. This gave us a solid sense of pride for our families, our culture and our traditions.
I married my high school sweetheart and we’ve been married for 29 years. We have two children; a 25 year old son and a 23 year old daughter. My husband, my children and I graduated from Texas A & M. We bleed maroon and white!
I have always wanted to join a school like Epps Island and I’m so proud to finally be at my dream school.
I promise you that your child’s safety and learning are my top priorities and that I will lead this school with my heart.
My vision is that your child soars academically and as a young responsible citizen! We can accomplish this with you and the EPPS Island TIGER Staff working together as a collaborative team!
Looking forward to serving your child,
Maribel Scarbrough

Estimados Padres,

Ms. T. Brain, Assistant Principal

Hello Epps Island!

My name is Tonya Brain and I am the newest member of the Epps Island administrative team. I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am to work with an amazing staff, wonderful children, and fantastic parents. It is going to be a GREAT school year!

I come to Epps Island with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston (Go Coogs!) and my Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Lamar University. Prior to this I taught English Language Arts, Texas History, and US History in grades 7 and 8, as well as English Language Arts and Social Studies in grade 5.

I consider myself the luckiest woman in the world because I have the opportunity every day to impact student’s lives for the better. I cannot wait to get to know you ALL! Varga Sept 2015.png
Ms. V. Varga, Assistant Principal

I am thrilled to be joining Epps Island Elementary as the newest Assistant Principal! I am beginning my 12th year in education. I’ve held a variety of positions throughout my career, including 3rd and 4th Grade Teacher, ESL Coordinator, Instructional Specialist, and School Counselor.  I earned a Bachelor of Science in 1997 from Sam Houston State University (
Eat ‘Em Up Kats!), and have a Master of Education degree, as well.

When I'm not at school, you'll probably find me relaxing with my family, shopping, spending time with the giraffes at the Houston Zoo, traveling to New Orleans, or running around with my dog, Ginger.  And of course, during football season, I try to catch as many games as possible (
Go Saints!).

I am looking forward to getting to know the families, students and educators at Epps Island Elementary!
